Tropical Storm Melissa is predicted to strengthen into a rare highest-level hurricane as it turns towards Jamaica, causing life-threatening sudden floods and rock falls.

The cyclone, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 06:00 GMT, is presently veering north-west in the Caribbean region and is expected to make landfall by early next week, as reported by hurricane specialists.

Advisories of electricity outages and structural damage have been released as Melissa brings up to 30 inches of precipitation and coastal flooding as high as 4m above normal levels. "Seek shelter now," inhabitants have been advised.

The cyclone is the 13th storm in the current Atlantic hurricane season, which typically ends in late autumn.

Most Intense Hurricane Risk

A category five storm is the most intense classification, with sustained winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

"Several days of harmful winds and heavy rainfall has started and will cause devastating and dangerous flash flooding and numerous landslides," counseled climate experts.

Jamaican Prime Minister the official said: "I realize that there are countless citizens who are worried, who are deeply troubled, and appropriately: concern is justified.

"Yet the most effective method to address worry and any nervousness and concern is to stay ready."

Inhabitants are being told to fortify their houses with sand barriers and timber panels, and to accumulate essentials.

Advisories are also in effect for areas in Haiti encompassing the capital, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and Cuba's eastern region, where the hurricane is expected to bring similar effects by the middle portion of the coming week.
