Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying these medications must be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication describe a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
