During an initial day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring advice to be modest, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan promising:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a city under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing Political Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual warning about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
